METHOD

Treatment always starts with you either bringing a current report from the sleep laboratory or receiving a questionnaire from us in advance, which asks about all relevant questions in relation to all current sleep disorders.

In a detailed discussion, I will listen to your concerns and needs and I will explain to you how sleep works, why you have problems with it and how we can solve them.

The core of any diagnosis is always the sleep study, so that we can analyse all the important characteristics of your sleep and identify disorders.

Only then therapy will initiated, which is based on the sleep study and questionnaire.

Insomnia treatment traditionally begins with what is known as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBTI)

It has been shown that a scientifically based app with supportive guidance achieves the best results. This treatment focusses on sleep hygiene, relaxation techniques, sleep restriction and attitudes towards sleep, so that you can regain confidence in your sleep.

If you are only bothered by snoring, the mandibular advancement device(MAD), which is similar to dental splints against grinding can help.

These two-part splints for the upper and lower jaw, made according to individual dental scans are connected to each other by bars or wings. During sleep, the forward position of the lower jaw tightens all surrounding tissue, preventing fluttering and thus the annoying snoring noises.

The MAD is also used for mild to moderate breathing disorders and fulfils the function of the upper airways in this case. This ensures an undisturbed airway to saturate the blood with sufficient oxygen.

This targeted intervention avoids alarming wake-up reactions, prevents the heart and circulation from being unnecessarily burdened by constant oxygen fluctuations and thus prevents heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes.

In cases of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, the gold standard is a so-called positive pressure ventilation (CPAP mask), which ensures that sufficient oxygen reaches the lungs. The consistent use of this device contributes significantly

to improving the quality of life.

Nevertheless, the acceptance and adherence concerning these appliances can be challenging due to the night-time disturbance for the patient and partner and possible side effects. In cases where the tolerance of these masks is limited, an alternative option is to treat breathing disorders with a mandibular advancement device.

Our method is characterised not only by its effectiveness, but also by its adaptability to the individual needs of our patients. We always strive to offer you customised solutions to help you achieve high-quality and comfortable sleep therapy.

THERAPY PROCESS

Initial consultation and clarification of concerns

- at our practice in List or online via Zoom

Your journey to improved sleep quality begins with a empathetic initial consultation.
Here we clarify your individual concerns and discuss all relevant aspects of your sleep situation.
If you already have a report from a sleep laboratory, this will be carefully integrated into our sleep medical assessment.

We take the time to understand your specific needs and show you the best possible way to a restful night's sleep.

Sleep measurement (polygraphy)

- independently in your own home

We provide you with the measuring device for your sleep study.
You can either collect the device from our practice or we can send the device to your home.

Discussion of your sleep results, as well as presentation and explanation of the therapy with oral appliances (MAD)

- in our practice in List or online via Zoom

Based on the results of the sleep study, I will explain to you what is causing you sleepless nights and making you tired and unable to concentrate during the day. We will then demonstrate and explain in detail how our oral appliance work. By gently advancing the lower jaw, they help to open your airways and thus enable effective treatment. To offer you full transparency, you will receive a cost estimate, which you can check at your leisure at home.

Scans/Impressions and appliance fabrication

- in our practice or at a certified dentist in your area

The next step is to take precise impressions or scans of the upper and lower jaw to produce a customised model. At the same time, we register the specific forward movement of your lower jaw to open the upper airway. This careful procedure lays the foundation for the customised adaptation of your therapy.

Insertion and training

- in our practice or at a certified dentist in your area

After about one to two weeks, the oral appliance will be delivered and is ready for insertion. We will show you in detail how to insert and remove the splint correctly and explain the correct way to use and care for it.
Your satisfaction and safety are our top priority, which is why we take the time for thorough training.

Adjustment phase and check-up

- in our practice or at a certified dentist in your home area

After a two-week adaptation phase, a comprehensive examination and check-up is carried out. The correct adjustment of the dental splint is crucial for an effective effect and minimal side effects. For this reason, it is essential to objectively assess the effectiveness by means of a night-time polygraphy at home after the familiarisation phase. This serves both to optimise the setting of the appliance and to confirm the success of the therapy. Your well-being is at the centre of everything we do
We accompany you step by step on your way to restful sleep and are always at your side with expertise and care.
